Lymphoedema

About

I completed the Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) training offered by Sally Kay in the UK. The RLD treatment is based on the anatomy, physiology and function of the lymphatic system and the principles of manual Lymph Drainage massage (MLD) and Simple Lymph Drainage exercises (SLD).

RLD uses the reflexology anatomical reflection theory to mirror these principles on the corresponding reflexes of the feet. The intention with RLD treatment is to cause an effect on the drainage function and thus reduce lymphoedema swelling in the affected limb(s). Her research on using this particular reflexology protocol for the management of secondary lymphoedema in patients affected by treatment for breast cancer is available at https://www.reflexologylymphdrainage.co.uk/research.html

Where possible, the RLD protocol involves a standardised method of Limb Volume Circumference Measurements (LVCM), which I absolutely love to use as it not only aids in providing the patient with a monitoring tool for each session, but also allows me to develop an evidence based reflexology practice through the data collection. I also make use of the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS):- a 10cm line with a smiley face at one end and a sad face at the other, to assess any presenting condition or more than one concern.
