Areola Re-pigmentation

Areola re-pigmentation is considered the final step to having your breasts looking beautiful and natural again!

What is it?

Areola re-pigmentation is similar to the art of tattooing whereby pigment is gently and superficially inserted into the skin by the use of a motorized machine and needle to artificially resemble that of a natural areola and nipple. It is best suited to patients who have undergone breast surgery/ mastectomies and have lost pigmentation in their areolas’ and nipple areas.

The breast reconstructive process must be complete and healed before commencing with the re-pigmentation of the areola and/or nipple.

How many treatments do I need?

A minimum of 2 sessions is required to determine your Areola re-pigmentation is complete.

Touch ups are usually advisable every 2-3 years.

How long does it last?

Depending on the condition of your skin, results may vary, but usually from 5-8 years.

How is it done?

A full consultation is performed prior to the procedure to discuss your expectations, medical history and rule out any contra-indications.

We then begin with measuring the area to be worked on and map out a proportionate and symmetrical shape and design that best suits your breasts. If only one areola is needed, we will match it to the other areola according to size, shape and colour.

You will get the opportunity to give the ‘go ahead’ on the shape and positioning of your new areola and nipples.

Once you are satisfied, we then apply anaesthetic to the area, and begin with the procedure. The actual tattooing process could take anything between 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete, depending on sensitivity and the work required.

After the “colouring” process is complete, the area may appear darker and redness or bruising may be visible. It will take roughly 7 days for the area to heal and the skin to settle.

Fading and loss of colour is completely normal once the initial healing has taken place. Your 2nd treatment should be done between4-6 weeks. The touch up is very important to ensure good retention of colour and for any shape or colour corrections.

Is it painful?

A topical anaesthetic is applied to the area to reduce any sensitivity. Discomfort is minimal with these procedures. If sensitivity continues, a secondary anaesthetic is applied where needed.

How do I look after it while healing?

After-care lotion will be given to you after your initial treatment with step-by-step instructions on how to look after your new areolas.

The area will be covered with specialized gauze to protect your new ‘tattoo”. This can be removed the following day.
